FG says EndSARS protest was hijacked by IPOB and other secessionist groups

The Nigerian government has said the EndSARS protest was hijacked by the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and other secessionists.

The National Economic Council (NEC) made the statement shortly after its emergency meeting in Abuja on Monday, October 26, Daily Trust reported.

NEC says secessionists are culpable for the violence that trailed the protests.

The NEC which is chaired by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo blamed secessionists for continually hijacking demonstrations and causing mayhem and lawlessness across the country.

The council also pointed out that economic issues partly prompted the civil unrest witnessed in the country.

It recommended good governance and improved service delivery as the fundamental panacea to social tensions.

NEC advocated for social welfare to be given greater priority in the first instance.

The council also agreed to frame a new security architecture for the country which will engage with the youth, civil society, and religious leaders.

NEC is a forum where the nation’s economic planning efforts and programmes of the various levels of government are reviewed.

It comprises the 36 state governors, the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), minister of finance, secretary to the government of the federation, and some other government officials.

Meanwhile, following the violence which trailed the #EndSARS protest in Ondo, the state police command has confirmed the death of two policemen and one civilian.

The Nation reported that the Ondo state commissioner of police, Bolaji Salami, disclosed this while parading 18 suspected looters and arsonists.

Bolaji said one of the policemen was killed and burnt inside his car in Ondo town while the other one was killed in Ore, another town in the state.
