Facebook messenger since it's inception has been used for different purposes ranging from chatting to sharing of pictures, videos, GIF's, etc. But however, we've all been in that situation where we just wish we could secure out chat.

Thanks to Facebook's Messenger Secret Conversation which allows end-to-end encryption between a chat or conversation.

Facebook Secret Conversation is a feature in the Facebook Messenger mobile app that provides end-to-end encryption between devices running the most current version of the application.

While this feature is turned on by default (depending on your device), your messages aren’t encrypted by default–you have to manually start a secret conversation in order to use encryption/secret conversation. It doesn’t work with video, voice calling, or GIF files but you can send images through the encrypted chat.

Again this feature is very secure, Not only will your conversation remain a secret from prying eyes, but even the government and Facebook itself won’t be able to access conversations that take place in secret mode.

Facebook Secret Conversations are easy to set up and easy to use, so if you’d like to learn more about this feature, keep reading!

Turning on Facebook Secret Conversations

Before you can have a secret conversation using Facebook Messenger, make sure this feature is turned on. It’s easy to do, and the steps are below.

Select your Profile Picture

From the home screen of Facebook Messenger, select your profile picture in the top left corner.

Scroll to Secret Conversations

If it isn’t already switched on, switch it on.

When ON, conversations that take place in secret mode will be end-to-end encrypted on all of your devices at the same time.

Starting a Brand New Secret Conversation

There are two ways to start a Secret Conversation: you can start one fresh, or you can switch an existing conversation over.

To start a fresh one with a friend, you simply tap on the compose icon at the top of Messenger’s home screen Select “Secret” in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.

Once you select “Secret” pick the friend you want to send the secret message to

Switching Over to a Secret Conversation From an Existing One

Assuming you've been chatting with someone on the Facebook messenger app and then for some reasons want to say somethings secret how then can you then switch to secret mode. Simple!!

Tap on the name of the person you are conversing with at the top navigation bar.

In the contact menu, select “Secret Conversation” located roughly halfway down the screen.

Your conversation will now be converted to a “Secret Conversation” and you can begin sending messages back and forth.

Unlike the regular conversations where your text bubbles are blue, in “Secret Conversation” mode they will be black.

One vital thing to note: when you use this trick to start a Secret Conversation with an existing chat partner, it doesn’t retroactively protect your existing conversation.

In fact, it actually splits your conversational stream with them into two: your regular non-encrypted Facebook Messenger chat continues and a new Secret Conversation chat starts.

Setting the timer

To do so, tap the clock icon where you would type your message.

Choose how long you’d like your messages to appear within the Secret Conversation. When their time is up, these messages will no longer be shown within the conversation.

If you’re worried about how notifications from a Facebook Secret Conversation will appear on your lock screen, Facebook Messenger will alert you that you have a message but will not specify who it’s from.

Deleting Secret Conversations

You can approach this issue one of two ways.

1. Delete individual Secret Conversations at the chat level by tapping on your Secret Conversation chat partner’s name and then selecting “Delete Conversation”.

2. Return to the menu we first visited in the tutorial to check the status of Secret Conversations on your device

Profile > Secret Conversations–and select “Delete Secret Conversations”.

After confirming, it will delete all the Secret Conversations on your device.

That’s all there is to it, with a little insight into how it all works, you can easily begin enjoying an encrypted chat with all your Facebook Messenger pals.

Share with your family and friends, they deserve to know.
