How to Connect a PS3 Controller to a PC

Many people love using keyboard when playing computer games but I can assure using a PS controller is way more exciting. Most games are best enjoyed using a Controller games.

The question might be how can I connect a PS3 controller to my PC. If only you can then you would be able to play your favorite games without the need for a mouse and keyboard.

This post can be best applied to the DualShock 3 controller for PlayStation 3 and computers running Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10.

How to use a PS controller on your computer:

Older and newer controllers like PS2&4 allows you to easily install for example using the PS4 controller you are required to plug it in,

But connecting the DualShock 3 controller to a computer takes considerably more effort.

Have no few with the below steps you can do it iin less than 25 minutes.

What You'll Need

Hardware

A PS3 DualShock 3 controller

Mini-USB cable (default PS3 charging cable)

Bluetooth dongle if you wish to connect wirelessly (optional)

NOTE: If your computer has a Bluetooth connection already then there is no need for a Bluetooth dongle.

Software

How to Connect

If your DualShock 3 controller is paired with a PS3, first unplug the PS3 from its power source, or else it can cause syncing conflicts.

  • Plug the DualShock 3 into your PC via a mini-USB cable. also plug in your wireless Bluetooth dongle if your computer does not have a built-in Bluetooth support.

  • Install and run the Downloaded ScpToolkit.

Note: The folder will be in a zip format so make sure you download and install a file archiver utility for Windows software like WinRAR if you don’t have one yet.

  • Accept the terms and choose your install location, after which you'll get a menu of all the options to install, as in the screenshot above. I recommend leaving this to the default. Click Install to begin the installation.

Note: Make sure the ScpToolkit Bluetooth Pair Utility option is ticked.

  • After some seconds, ScpToolkit will be installed, and you'll see this screen, with a big green button saying Run Driver Installer. Click the button and lets advance.

  • On the next screen, make sure the box beside Install DualShock 3 driver and Install Bluetooth driver are checked (if you have a Bluetooth dongle plugged in).

  • Uncheck Install DualShock 4 driver (and uncheck Install Bluetooth driver if you don't have a Bluetooth dongle).

  • Select the arrow beside Choose Dualshock 3 controllers to install and choose your PlayStation 3 controller from the drop-down menu.

  • click the arrow next to "Choose Bluetooth dongles to install" and find your Bluetooth device in the list. Check it.

Once installed you will find the icon in your system tray. You can thereafter make certain adjustment to the settings.

Note: Since you’re technically using the Xbox 360 drivers to interact with the PS3 controller, games will likely display an Xbox control scheme. so you won't get the correct Square/Cross/Triangle/Circle button icons by default. Some games let you manually choose your button icons, though. Look for that in game settings.

Using it Wireless via Bluetooth

If you obviously do not want to use it while connected wirelessly then unplug it and after a couple seconds it will sync via Bluetooth. You'll get a notification in the system tray when it does.

This works after a reboot, too. If you allow ScpToolkit to start with Windows, you should simply be able to plug in your PS3 controller again and it'll instantly be recognized. Once the LED is on, unplug the controller, and it'll once again be synced via Bluetooth.

How to Use a Wireless PS3 Controller With a PC via Bluetooth

To use your PS3 controller wirelessly, you'll either need a PC with built-in Bluetooth compatibility or a Bluetooth dongle plugged in. That said, you must plug in the controller before you can play wirelessly. After unplugging the controller, it should automatically sync with your PC via Bluetooth if the proper drivers are installed.
